SARK

Beaches
La Grande Greve
Sark's most beautiful sandy bay, is reached by steep, but safe, steps leading down from the north end of La Coupée. At low tide, this is the perfect spot for a family picnic, with its vast expanse of golden sands, crystal clear water for swimming, and plenty of rock pools, arches and caves to explore.

La Coupee
The razor-edged isthmus joining the main island to Little Sark, is the most spectacular sight in the Channel Islands. Before 1900 when protective railings were erected, children from Little Sark, had to crawl on their hands and knees to avoid being blown over the edge.

The present narrow concrete road was built in 1945 by German POWs under Royal Engineers direction. There is a 300 foot precipice on the left side of Convanche Bay. On the right lies the large, beautiful, sandy bay of La Grande Grêve.

Hogs Back
An ancient cannon still stands today on the old defence headland of Hogs Back which separates the two beautiful bays of Derrible and Dixcart. An ideal spot for sunbathing and picnics, with superb views in every direction.

To reach Hogs Back, visitors walk through the wooded Dixcart Valley. The unspoilt valley contains a wealth of tree and plant species and truly comes alive each Spring with the most spectacular display of bluebells and wild garlic.

The Window In The Rock
Sark's 'Window in the Rock' is a man-made hole which was created in the side of the headland at Port du Moulin. It offers visitors a superb view of Les Autelets - the narrow stacks of rock which lie just off Sark's north-west coast.

Sheltered Bays
Even on those days when there is a strong wind, you can always find a sheltered bay. If the wind is blowing from the North/South, the best beach to be on is La Grande Grêve. When it is coming from the North/South West, the most sheltered places are Port Gorey, or the beaches of Derrible or Dixcart.

If the wind is blowing from the North West/South East, the best bays are Les Fontaines Bay or Grêve de la Ville. When it is coming from the East/South West, the most sheltered beach is Port du Moulin or Le Port à la Jument.
