The entire breakwater, about 700 metres long, offers fine sea watching. Gulls and shags are in the area whatever the time of year. During the summer, gannets and terns are often seen out at sea, both are noted for their graceful flight. Gannets travel miles to find food, (there are two colonies off Alderney), and terns are also known as sea swallows.
When the tide is low, oystercatchers and occasionally little egrets can be seen searching for shellfish in the shallow pools.
Also from the end of the breakwater there are frequent sightings of small schools of bottle-nosed dolphins.
There are upper and lower walks along the breakwater, the lower is recommended. Watch out for uneven sections, but generally St. Catherines provides easy access, although its probably a place to avoid on a windy day.
